On arguably the swankiest block in Boston, stylists at The Salon at 10 Newbury keep busy perfecting tresses, but often their clients aren’t there.They are working on wigs.Salon owner, Patricia Wrixon has been doing work involving hair replacement and restoration for nearly 40 years. She said she was inspired years ago by a friend.”A childhood friend was diagnosed with cancer and at that time, the technology wasn’t there,” Wrixon said. “The wigs weren’t really that natural looking and I felt really devastated.”But times and the products available for people experiencing hair loss have changed.The Salon at 10 Newbury carries or creates hairpieces of all lengths, colors and textures.Valena Watson of Roxbury is a client at the salon.”I’m a Bostonian,” Watson said. “I have two sons and three grandchildren, and (I’m) doing treatment for breast cancer.”Diagnosed in June of 2021, Watson said she started losing her hair due to chemotherapy.”My hair started disintegrating,” she said. “It didn’t even come out. It just was gone.”Watson described her hair loss as devastating because it made the cancer very real to her.”It’s so scary,” Watson said. “I’ve been trying to keep it together for my family because we’re going through this together.”Watson said she found The Salon at 10 Newbury through Wrixon’s non-profit organization, Wigs for Well-Being.Wrixon said her charity serves people of all ages who qualify due to medical-related hair loss and financial need.”The best thing is that I didn’t have to worry about the price,” Watson said. “They give it to you for free. So, it was just a blessing.””Everyone in here is kind and thoughtful and knows what our mission is,” Wrixon said. “I’m really proud that we do that.”Find more information about Wigs for Well-Being here.
